We need to be very careful that we don't "humanize" our horses health and compare their nutritional needs to our own digestive needs, and none more so than when dealing with how both species differ on how we process fats and oils.
This is because
HORSES DO NOT HAVE A GALL BLADDER,
as unlike in many other mammals, including humans, dogs, cows, sheep, goats etc... the gall bladder is responsible for storing bile, which is the emulsifying agent responsible for the digestion and breaking down of oils and fats, and without it the horse can only do this through the liver, so it's vital that horses are not fed large amounts of fat or oils.
So if you are going to give oil to your horse, which IS THE BEST FOR HEALTH, and will give you your best effect for your buck......
Well when all the evidence is presented, the only really great source of fat that you should be giving your horse is
Cold-Pressed Unrefined Flaxseed Oil, which is often also referred to by its American name of Linseed, as worldwide research has clearly shown all the others fall short in the nutrient stakes...
However flaxseeds on their own are not beneficial to the horse, as the nutritional goodies inside cannot be accessed unless ground or pressed so bear that in mind too. Ground Flaxseeds from oil or meal (the oil contains way more than the meal) contain high levels of beneficial Alpha Linolenic Acid, or more commonly known as omega 3, which are absolutely fantastic for all our horses health requirement (and ours too) and these are just a few of the benefits noted below:
*Reduce inflammation within the delicate digestive tract and body
*Balances the immune system
*Protect joints and ligaments
*Maintain hoof and hair health
*Reduce skin allergies
*Improve heart and blood vessel health
Unsuitable oils for horses include
COCONUT OIL :way too fatty with high levels of saturated fats and no omega 3,s
FISH OILS:...definitely not...the horse is a veggie, and should never eat animal products plus very low omega 3's
SOYABEAN /WHEATGERM OIL: too little omega 3, and too many omega 6's fatty acids which is not good for horses as causes inflammation in this balance
OLIVE OIL: although healthful to humans this contains high levels of omega 9 and low levels of omega 3 which is not a suitable balance for horses
CANOLA OIL: one of ghe better oils as has small amounts of omega 3, but high levels of omega 6,s which causes inflammation
SUNFLOWER OIL: this oil is inflammatory to our horses body which leads to the production of free radicals and more inflammation
RICE BRAN OIL: hardly any omega 3 so pointless really
CORN OIL: no omega 3, and high levels of inflammatory omega 6,s
VEGETABLE OIL: this is too vague a term and doesn't tell us which vegetables the oil was taken from so therefore we can,t know the benefits or downsides etc..so not recommended
SO IT'S FLAXSEED ALL THE WAY FOR HAPPY HEALTHY HORSES :)
